Our own strawberries ready!

Posted in General

As the weather has continued to warm up this week, we are expecting the strawberries to be ready for picking this week-end!  We are well underway with the gooseberries, so the arrival of the strawbs is welcome, and well-timed for Wimbledon week!  (To think that our 24 hour charity tennis marathon was a full year ago….!)  Come and “pick your own” in the sunshine, but don’t forget that the asparagus season has only a week to go before it ends for another year…

Our busy week-end revisited…

The asparagus tasting last week-end went very well – the asparagus based terrines from Espley Farm, Hodnet, proving a real hit, particularly both the asparagus/chicken and the cream cheese/asparagus varieties!  Our own home-made asparagus quiche was also a real winner, and the asparagus and Cheshire cheese muffins were delish straight out of the oven – quite a surprise and also a talking point!

Open Farm Sunday was enjoyed by all that came and we were pleased to see some new faces.  As usual the tractor and trailer rides were a hit, as was the barbecue (!) and it was a delight to see visitors just sit and enjoy the farmyard life, including all the nesting birds flying in and out of the farm buildings, feeding their young.  The deteriorating weather in the afternoon was a pity though, and the torrential downpour at around 3 put paid to the rest of the day!  This was a great pity as it meant that not many had the opportunity to view the cows at milking time.   A rather annoyingly typical English summers day…

A busy week-end to come!

Plans are well underway for this week-end’s events…..We have been trawling through new asparagus recipes to try out at our Asparagus Tasting on Friday and Saturday (11 – 3).  Delights to be sampled include our delicious home-made asparagus quiche, garden pea and asparagus mousse, dips, asparagus tart and terrines!

And the fun does not stop there!  We are praying for sunshine, because there will be plenty of opportunities to tour the farm on Open Farm Sunday (11 – 4), including tractor rides upto the asparagus fields, also to see the animals and even a view of the parlour at milking time!  Rain or shine, you can see farming at Hungersheath up close and personal!
